Ole Miss controls MSU on both ends of court in dominant win

Photo courtesy of MSU Athletics Story by SportsTalk Mississippi’s Brian Hadad Mississippi State’s up and down season hit another valley, and Ole Miss got a win it desperately needed, controlling both sides of the court in a 64-46 win over the Bulldogs. The Rebels held State to 35% shooting from the field, outrebounded the Bulldogs by 6, and forced a dozen turnovers to take a surprisingly easy win back to Oxford. pic.twitter.com/hMnOv1ceRk — Mississippi State MBK (@HailStateMBK) January 20, 2021 State led 11-10 early in the first half, but a 8-0 Rebel run put Kermit Davis’ squad on top for good. The Rebels were led by Devontae Shuler, who scored 22 points on 8-13 shooting. Jarkel Joiner was the only other Rebel in double figures with 12. State was led by DJ Stewart, who scored 14 points, and Tolu Smith, who scored 10 despite being in foul trouble most of the night. The Bulldogs cut the lead down to four in the second half, but then went over 7 minutes without a field goal, leading to the final margin of defeat. Ole Miss has now won 11 of the last 15 in the series. Mississippi State falls to 9-6, 4-3 in the SEC. The Bulldogs will be back in action Saturday against the SEC leaders, the Alabama Crimson Tide, who are undefeated in conference play thus far. Tipoff is set for noon at the Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa. The post Ole Miss controls MSU on both ends of court in dominant win appeared first on News Mississippi.

With one exception, Mississippi delegation to attend Biden’s inauguration

On the eve of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, it appears that all but one member of Mississippi’s delegation in Washington D.C. will be on hand to observe the transfer of power.  Biden will be sworn in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Wednesday at noon when he will officially become the 46th President in the history of the United States. We’ve known for a while that outgoing President Donald Trump will not be in attendance, but most members of Mississippi’s delegation will be.  Both Senators Roger Wicker & Cindy Hyde-Smith will be there with the senior Senator issuing the following statement.  “I plan to attend the inauguration of Joe Biden, just as I have attended those of Presidents Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump. The orderly transfer of power is one of the majestic symbols of our republic,” Wicker said.  As for Mississippi’s House members, Congressmen Bennie Thompson (MS-02), the lone Democrat, indicated he will be there as did Congressmen Trent Kelly (MS-01) and Michael Guest (MS-03).  “Congressman Guest is in DC and plans to attend the Inauguration of President Biden. He remains committed to healing the divisions felt across our land and to uniting the people of our great nation,” a spokesman from Rep. Guest’s office said in a statement.  Rep. Steven Palazzo’s office has confirmed that the Congressman from the Coast will not be attending.  “Congressman Palazzo will not be attending the inauguration. He originally planned to, but due to several last-minute changes to protocols regarding coronavirus screening handed down by the inaugural committee he will not be able to make it work. He plans to watch the inauguration from his home,” a statement from his office says.  Approximately 100 members of the Mississippi National Guard are also in D.C. providing support to law enforcement amid heightened tensions in aftermath of the recent capitol riots. Two Mississippi lawmakers test positive for COVID-19

Two weeks after the beginning of the 2021 Mississippi Legislative Session, two lawmakers have tested positive for COVID-19.  Originally reported by Mississippi Today and confirmed by News Mississippi, a Senate member contracted the virus, promoting leadership to notify the Department of Health.  “We have been notified that a Senator has tested positive for COVID. We immediately contacted Dr. Dobbs, and are following his protocol,” Leah Rupp Smith, Deputy Chief of Staff for Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann, said.  Mississippi Today also reports that the House learned of a positive case earlier in the week. The lawmakers have not been identified and it appears that additional testing efforts are underway.  Last summer, a COVID-19 outbreak at the capitol resulted in over 40 positive cases. Prior to the beginning of this year’s session, Lt. Governor Hosesmann discussed the possibility of a delay, allowing the vaccine rollout to ramp up before gaveling in but others chose to press on as planned.  The post Two Mississippi lawmakers test positive for COVID-19 appeared first on News Mississippi.

Ole Miss, Mississippi State drop 2021 baseball schedules

The excitement continues to build as we inch closer to the 2021 college baseball season with both Ole Miss and Mississippi State releasing their respective schedules.  Both squads cracked the top 10 of D1 Baseball’s preseason rankings with the Rebels coming in at No. 6 and the Bulldogs right on their heels at No. 7. The season begins on February 19th as Ole Miss and Mississippi State will travel to Arlington, Texas for the State Farm College Baseball Showdown. While full details haven’t been announced, the showcase will be hosted at Globe Life Field—the home of the Texas Rangers.  Following their non-conference slate to open the season, Ole Miss will begin SEC play on March 19th against Auburn at Swayze Field while the Bulldogs open conference play on the road at LSU.  Southern Miss has yet to announce its full schedule, but it will include a matchup against the Bulldogs in Pearl on March 2nd.  This year’s 3-game series between Ole Miss and Mississippi State will take place in Starkville the weekend of April 16th. This will represent the only scheduled meeting between the rivals this season following the cancellation of the annual Governor’s Cup. “Due to scheduling and logistical challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ole Miss and Mississippi State have agreed that the Governor’s Cup game in Pearl will not be played this year. While we are disappointed for our loyal fans in the Jackson area, we look forward to seeing our storied rivalry renewed during the scheduled three-game series April 16-18,”  a joint statement from the universities says. Both teams hope to pick up where they left off when the 2020 season was abruptly canceled at the onset of the pandemic. At the time, the Rebels were riding high on a 16-game winning streak and the Bulldogs were 12-4.
