‘American Idol’ hosts virtual auditions for Mississippi this Wednesday

Mississippians will have a chance to audition for the nineteenth season of the hit show, American Idol, this upcoming Wednesday, August 26.

Just like the tail end of season 18, all auditions will be hosted virtually due to concerns from the coronavirus, but according to one of the show’s producers, the virtual auditions make the process easier for contestants all around.

“It’s a whole new experience, but it’s super easy to audition,” American Idol producer Melissa Elfar said. “It’s very seamless. It’s very easy. Now is the time if you have ever thought about it or you have already auditioned or you were always nervous or you couldn’t make the drive.”

Through the show’s recently implemented “Idol Across America” program, every state has a specific date set aside for its citizens to try their cards at becoming the next American Idol, but don’t worry if you’re not able to try out this Wednesday.

“If for some reason, you cannot make it on Wednesday, it’s not a problem,” Elfar continued. “I always tell people to pick your next favorite state and register to audition during that state’s time. We just don’t want people to think that if they can’t make it during their state’s date that they cannot audition.”

As for whether season 19, which is set to begin in the spring of 2021, will be live and in-person or produced remotely, Elfar and the rest of the American Idol crew are taking it “one day at a time.”

“Right now, our primary focus is just really finding that next American Idol and that next superstar,” she said with a sense of optimism.

Will the next winner of American Idol be from Mississippi? We’ll have to just wait and see.

The last time the Magnolia State took the Idol scene by storm was in 2016 when Trent Harmon and La’Porsha Renae—both native to Mississippi—were the fifteenth season’s final two contestants with Harmon being named the eventual winner.
